Posted 8 August: Time to renew! Pay now and save! At the recent Board meeting the directors passed a motion to increase from August 1st, 2012 the annual club fees from $25 to $30 for individual membership and from $40 to $50 for family membership. As in the past, the fees for joining after January 1st are half those amounts. The board has endeavored for some years not to increase the fees so as not to turn away potential new members. However increases in expenditure like insurance policies have meant that a fee increase now was felt to be unavoidable. However the savings made in parking fees will overall mean you can see a reduction in your expenditure. See item below about parking at the reservoir. You can pay your fees in cash or check to any board member, or by mail or by credit card. Details here.
Posted 7/5: Saturday Venue Change. Starting on July 14th as an ongoing experiment, we will move the starting venue for the Saturday club runs to the Stevens Creek Dam parking area. The board felt that the cost of our old parking lot might be putting off newcomers from joining the club. There is normally space for about 15 cars ouside the fence yet still off the road asphalt. If you already have a county parks pass you can park inside the fence. We will post a volunteer for the first few Saturdays at the old venue for 10 minutes or so to remind members and guests of the new arrangement. When there are busy events at the Dam we will probably move that day to the Pichetti parking area. Please let your board members know what you think of this new experiment.
Posted 6/26: By-Laws change and election of your new Board. After the announcements on Saturday July 7th at 8.30am at the normal Stevens Creek County Park, we will hold a Striders General Meeting. We have two very quick items of business. a) Some minor changes to the club's by-laws around insurance, the number on the board, when the board meets and how and when the new board members are elected. See the proposed changes in red in the page here. We'll hold a vote and if a majority give their approval the new by-laws will take a effect. b) Elect next year's board members. It is still not to late to put your name forward to any current board member to offer your services!
Posted 6/25 : Western States 100 in 2012 breaks records for endurance speed in low temperatures, Read newspaper article here. Two Striders entered the race this year. Bill Dodson aged 77, reached Devils Thumb at mile 48 before retiring. Peter Hargreaves finished his second race in 28:58:14.
Posted 6/16 : Rancho San Antonio Manzanita Trail renamed Quarry Trail. This week the old and loved Manzanita Trail from the top of PG&E trail up to Black Mountain Trail has become official and has benefitted from a huge amount of trail work. Details of the land swap involved between MROSD and Hanson here.
Posted 6/13 : Board Minutes posted here. See left for details of next week's meeting.
Posted 6/9 : USATF. The 2012 Pacific Area USATF Ultrarunnning competition has completed 12 events through May, and six USATF registered Striders completed 15 runs and scored over 300 points. While larger clubs such as Quicksilver and Tamalpa are leading again, Stevens Creek Striders are doing very well with a small group. We have runners scoring well in three age groups, and could do well in some others if some former USATF members renewed. At this time, we have only six registered members (3M, 3F) .
May 12, Johanna Ylanen had a women's first-place overall at Quicksilver's 50-mile run! The Quicksilver team was disappointed, but we're very proud ! Three other Striders (Bill Dodson, John McKiernan, Christina Brownson) comprised a mixed team in the Quicksilver 50-km run. May 20, two Striders (John McKiernan and Chuck Wilson) completed the Ohlone Wilderness 50-km run, and it might have been four, but personal issues do come up.
Two stars so far have been Bill Dodson (completing five events and in a strong first-place), and his very capable pacer and safety-runner Lina McCain (American River, Miwok, others). Bill is working hard to compete in and complete the June Western States 100, hoping to be the oldest-ever finisher. He needs your support, and we wish him a safe and successful run.
After 100-mile runs in June and July, 4 of the final 7 events are in the SF Bay Area. If you're interested, take a look at http://pausatf.org/data/2012/mutsched12.html and contact our USATF lead (John McKiernan; email@example.com) to coordinate teams where we can.
Posted May 29 : Dates for your calendars: Clambake: Sunday, September 9th. Striders Holiday Party at the R&W Vineyard: Saturday 8 December.
Posted May 21 : Striders Predictive 10k Challenge and Spring Picnic. Saturday 19th saw a good turn out for this event. Randy Ison, Patrick Saxton and Eric Lacher came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in best estimating their duration over a hilly 10k course, with 2050 ft elevation gain and loss. See Hans' photos on the Striders meetup.com page: here.
Posted May 21 : Quicksilver Striders' successes. In the 50 mile Joanna Ylannen (right) 9:06:59, was first female overall and Jean Pommier, 3:55:08, was first and set a new age group record in the 50k. The Striders volunteered once again to mount the Dam Overlook aid station where the runners came through either once (25k) or three times for a total of 750 visitors. Great fun was had by all. Thank you all who helped. More results.
Posted 5/2 : Senior Challenge! Big Sur 10.6 Miler 29th April.
Dick & Judy Opsahl (both members) entered the Big Sur 10.6 miler last Sunday at Carmel.
Dick writes: "We were part of a 5 person team from the Sequoias. Our average age about 78. Nonetheless 2 of us placed first M 80-99 and first F 80-99. The 10.6 miler was one of a series of shorter runs enabling many others who were not able to get into the marathon to nevertheless take part in the fun of the day. Our 10.6 mile run started at marathon mile point 15.6 so that we would finish at the same place as the marathon runners. They also had a 21 miler, 9 miler and 5 k run and even a relay. Amazing that they could organize such a complex event. Bussing was provided from the finish area to the various starts and seemed to work without a hitch.
We 5 plan to do it again next year." Dick Ospahl.
